Texas Legislator to Take Reins of House Ag Committee

Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, to become next chairman of House Agriculture Committee

The House Agriculture Committee will be headed by a new legislator in the 114th Congress: Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas. Conaway succeeds Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla.

Conaway is currently the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and Risk Management, and also is a member of the Livestock, Rural Development and Credit subcommittee.

Conaway also serves on the Armed Services Committee and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and is Chairman of the Ethics Committee.

House Ag Committee Ranking Member Collin Peterson, D-Minn., congratulated Conaway on his new post Tuesday.

"As a fellow CPA, I think we can find common ground as the Committee oversees farm bill implementation and reauthorizing the CFTC during the next Congress," Peterson said in a released statement. "The Agriculture Committee has a strong bipartisan tradition, which I look forward to continuing under Chairman Conaway.

"I would also like to commend Chairman Lucas for his leadership. While he will no longer be Chairman, I have no doubt he will remain a strong advocate for America's farmers and ranchers and a respected member of the Agriculture Committee."

Conaway earlier this year voted in support of the 2014 Farm Bill, also supporting tougher food stamp work requirements and drought aid for farmers.

Conaway also favored Grain Inspection Packers and Stockyards Administration regulation repeal and advocated for an overhaul of Country of Origin Labeling requirements in Committee discussion.

Full appointments and a roster of Ag Committee members for the 114th Congress are likely to be announced in 2015.

Though no official announcements have been made by the Senate Ag Committee, Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., is rumored to be staying on as Ranking Member while Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., is likely to take the Chairmanship, according to a legislative update from the National Milk Producers Federation.

Current Ranking Member Thad Cochran, R-Miss., is expected to instead lead the Senate Appropriations Committee.
