Pfizer Introduces New Antimicrobial at NCB

Advocin joins Pfizer's portfolio of antimicrobials for BRD treatment.

Pfizer Animal Health this week released Advocin, which the company says offers beef producers a cost-effective alternative for the treatment of bovine respiratory disease.

Advocin boasts a withdrawal time of just four days and a single dose of 2 mL/100 pounds, says J.P. Pollreisz, Pfizer Animal Health cattle technical services veterinarian.

Beef producers will need to work with their veterinarians to determine where the new antimicrobial fits in their operation, but an obvious possibility is late in the feeding period, Pollreisz says.

Advocin is part of the fluoroquinolone class of antimicrobials, which can quickly reach a high concentration at the site of infection.

Some producers already have used this product, which was formerly called A180 and was marketed by Pfizer as a two-dose antimicrobial with a 48-hour separation between administrations.

Pollreisz says Advocin is approved for treatment of BRD only and is not for metaphylaxis.

Advocin is available in 250 mL bottles, offering about 25 treatments per bottle based on a 500-pound animal.

Further, Pollreisz says Advocin is being launched at a "discounted price," which is lower than its only direct competition.

ADVOCIN joins Pfizer's portfolio of antimicrobials for BRD in cattle, including Draxxin Injectable Solution and Excede Sterile Suspension.
