The beef checkoff's Beef Quality Assurance program recently released two educational video sections on its YouTube channel geared toward cattle producers and quality assurance educators.
The video section titled "BQA Cattle Handling Tips for Cow/Calf Producers", demonstrates how to efficiently and humanely handle different types of cattle. They demonstrate and explain how to use low-stress techniques for handling all classes of livestock: bulls, cows, heifers, cow-calf pairs, stocker and seedstock operations.
Handling experts Ron Gill, Curt Pate, Temple Grandin, John Maas and others explain the importance of pasture handling and pressure and release of that pressure. They talk about how important it is to train animals to move away from pressure before cattle are worked.
Pate explains, for example, that cattle which have been fed in the pasture and led around with feed sacks or buckets do not understand pressure and are not ready to be worked.
We've included the first video in the series - "Why Low Stress?" in this report to give you an idea of the content of these two video series available for cattle producers over the Web.
The series has multiple sections, including:
- Why use low-stress handling
- Facilities design
- Using temporary help
- Handling tips for calving time
- Gathering effectively with ATVs and horses
- Moving sick cattle
- Moving bulls
- Moving while intensive grazing
The second video series, titled "BQA Facilities Design," helps farmers, ranchers and cattle feeders of any size operation understand how to design good-functioning facilities to suit their needs.
Grandin and others spend a lot of time explaining how to make handling facilities work well and how to eliminate problems. Some segments on this video series include:
- Minimum requirements
- Sweep gate safety system
- Systems for small operations
- Systems for large operations
- Building a Bud box
