Merial Launches New BRD Antimicrobial

Long-acting Zactran enters antimicrobial market for BRD treatment.

Merial this week announced the large-scale launch of a long-acting antimicrobial called Zactran.

The company says Zactran offers rapid-response and 10 days of treatment and control of BRD with a single dose. It can be used for control of BRD in high-risk cattle or as a first-pull treatment of sick cattle.

When Zactran is administered to cattle it disperses immediately through their bodies and enters the white blood cells, says Bruce Nosky, a veterinarian with Merial large animal veterinary services. By that means it is then sent to the site of infection via the natural response of the animals' immune systems.

Zactran has actually been in use 6 months now on a limited basis and has already built a loyal following of repeat buyers, Nosky says. It is now available by prescription on a widespread basis.

When cattle with rectal temperatures above 104 degrees were treated with Zactran, more than 3/4 of them dropped below 104% within 24 hours. In clinically ill cattle, Zactran-treated cattle showed visible improvement in appearance within 24 hours.

Zactran is a "novel subclass of macrolide," which persists at high levels in lung tissue for extended periods. It reaches effective levels in beef animals' bodies within 30 minutes of injection.

It has a 35-day slaughter withdrawal time.

Labeled dose is 2 ml/110 pounds of animal weight, given subcutaneously in the neck. Nosky says Zactran is "very syringable," even at low temperatures.

It is available in bottle sizes of 100, 250 and 500 mL.
